Josephine Meckseper: Object Synthesisa
Object Synthesisa solo exhibition of new works by the German artist Josephine Meckseper, which includes new paintings, vitrines and film production that reflect the evolution and context of her working practice.
Among the works on display will be The Empire of Signs, a steel and glass showcase named after Roland Barthes' book of the same name. The artist describes a "novelistic object" that enables her to remotely isolate a certain number of features somewhere in the world, from which to form a new system of signs. Similarly, a vitrine contains a collection of objects with a subtle web of associations between them—loosely connected by their former or current function, location, and relationship to other objects in the exhibition. The spray-painted canvas continues the rhythm of the assembled objects in The Empire of Signs. The works outline objects housed in vitrines, forming images reminiscent of discarded table settings and shelving.
