Ishbel Myerscough: Transhumance

Transhumance is a solo exhibition by the renowned British artist Ishbel Myerscough, which through a series of paintings and drawings created between 2018 and 2024, the artist explores the ephemeral nature of life and its impermanence through highly detailed and meticulously observed portraits.

In "Ishbel, 2024," a self-portrait, the artist profoundly explores the feeling of invisibility that women of her age often feel. This candid self-portrait emphasizes the artist's tousled hair and exposed skin, contrasting with her vibrant patterned dresses, which are embellished with eyes, horses, snakes, and other graphic symbols, inspired by the figurative Elizabethan Portrait. This choice of clothing was intentional. She noticed that when she put on the dress, becoming more invisible a paradox.

In the exhibition, the artist combines focused research on youth and adulthood with adult experiences of parenthood, desire and bereavement, evoking the complex cycles of human experience. Preserving not only isolated moments but also time, these works reflect the ongoing process of parenting, mourning a child’s past while marveling at who they are becoming.
