Huang Bao-ying
Choice of Oblivion and Remembrance is a solo exhibition by the American-based Mainland Chinese artist Huang Bao-ying, which presents a fascinating selection of recent paintings, inviting viewers into an ethereal space filled with flowers, books, houseplants, and museum objects from the artist's daily life.
Through the coded narratives and symbols in her paintings, as well as the floral installations scattered, the artist seamlessly interweaves personal experiences of diaspora, contemporary cultural symbolism, and a poignant melancholy that resonates with recent collective social events, a tapestry of ideas and art is revealed with emotions are intricately intertwined with her identity.
As can be seen from many of the works in the exhibition, her painting practice was largely shaped by the conflicts, differences, and confrontations arising from her dual experiences growing up in China and currently living in the United States. The complex interplay of these cultural, social and personal dynamics is an important source of inspiration for her. The work exudes a subtle sense of tranquility and introspection at first glance, but beneath the calm exterior exudes an exciting energy that resonates with the suppressed, filtered, and eradicated social undercurrents implicit in her work.
Your immense knowledge makes you more like a prophet than an exhibition tour guide. We will always be grateful to you for that.
