Hernan Bas: Nightmares & Melancholy

Nightmares & Melancholy is a solo exhibition by the American conceptual artist Hernan Bas, featuring a new collection of paintings, works on paper, and the installation A Little Romeo and Juliet in All of Us (2004/24).

Considered a leading contemporary painter, known for his vibrant color palette, symbolism, and narratives that explore identity, sexuality, and gender. His work is heavily influenced by 18th-century Gothic "black romanticism" and focuses on human fears and the supernatural. The Swiss painter Henry Fuseli, particularly his famous work The Nightmare (1781), was his main source of inspiration. Fuseli's intense and eerie image of a sleeping woman tortured by demons and a ghostly horse reflects the emotional depth and dark aesthetics of his artwork.

This exhibition continues his exploration of the mysterious and uncanny, fusing beauty with themes of fear and desire. The rebellion against uniformity inherent in his work is reflected in the transhistorical themes of "Gothic". This expression of artistry emerged in England at the end of the 18th century and was shaped by the Rebellion of June 1780. Painting from the end of the Gothic movement Romanticism in 18th-century England is often described as "Black Romanticism", characterized by themes dealing with the human psyche, its fears and nightmares, and its provision for the unexplained, grotesque, and supernatural space.
